Ask the DJ/production duo Designer Drugs how many air miles they’ve logged over the past year and the answer requires more than a bit of calculating. “Over 300,000,” Michael Vincent Patrick referencing numerous spots around the world where the group has performed. “I have a really nice apartment in New York City, but I’ve only been there three days this month.”
It’s a testament both to the duo’s popularity and work ethic that that number may become the annual norm. After nearly 50 remixes for everyone from Mariah Carey to Annie to Thieves Like Us, the diverse electronic group, comprised of Patrick and Theodore Paul Nelson, is set to release their debut album Hardcore/Softcore on Ultra Records in February 2011.
Where past productions and remixes have been on the poppier end of the musical spectrum, Hardcore conjures up a darker, edgier vibe – think the throbbing, industrial-heavy opening club scene in “The Doom Generation” – yet still retains a melodic center on many of the tracks. “I think we’re making music for the apocalypse,” says Michael, only half-joking. “The state of society is at a place where people just don’t give a fuck and that’s what inspires our music.”
On Hardcore/Softcore, numerous sounds saddle up against each other, proving the title’s veracity. The punishing electro-industrial punk of “Dead Meat” and grinding, pounding beat of club bangers “Face Melter” and “The Terror” provide contrast to the pop vocals of Norwegian singer Annie on “Crazy For You” and fist-pumping up-tempo anthem “Into The Light.” Elsewhere, the classic electro-funk of “Leather Gang” sits comfortably against the Italo-shoegaze of “For All We Know” and lead single “Through The Prism” (out 10/26, Ultra Music), the new electro classic featuring Cerebral Vortex. In stark contrast to albums that sound like they’re on repeat by track four, Hardcore/Softcore ’s myriad styles are a welcome change from many electronic LPs.
While a debut album, Hardcore/Softcore functions as much as a culmination of a decade’s work as it does the next stage in a bourgeoning career. As the electro scene started to flourish in the early 2000s, the pair built a studio in Philadelphia and christened themselves Designer Drugs, balancing an in-demand DJing schedule with near-constant demand for track remixes, including Little Boots’ “Meddle,” Fischerspooner’s “The Best Revenge,” IAMX’s “Spit It Out” and Heartsrevolution’s “Switchblade.”
With Nelson currently in medical school, the duo has still found a way to keep up their busy musical careers. “I don’t really do anything else besides med school and music,” admits Theo. “I do worry about if I want to be a doctor or a DJ when I finish school, but I’ll just cross that bridge when I come to it.” Adds Michael: “When he has time off, we’ll meet and just write every day.”
School hasn’t stopped the group from putting on memorable live sets as much as possible. Spend a few minutes at one of Designer Drugs’ live shows and you’ll see the normally humble pair, spurred on by the intense energy of their music, transform into a different beast. “It gets pretty wild,” admits Michael. “Even though we’re mellow, there’s lots of stage diving and almost slam dancing. It’s next level dance club shit that almost morphs into that ‘90s hardcore/punk vibe.”
As for the future, more remixes, more original production, more DJ mixes (the online DATAMIX series is on 11 and counting) and many more DJ gigs promise to keep the pair busy for the foreseeable future. And no school will stop Designer Drugs from achieving their musical goals. “I got a month off coming up,” says Theo. “As soon as I get my first free day, it’s back to the studio with Michael.”

ABX (pronounced like three consecutive letters) and STV SLV (pronounced “steve sleeve”) are collectively known as The Hood Internet. For the past three years, the duo have been chewing up the indie, pop, rap and R&B landscapes and spitting out pure fire. Like laptop-armed alchemists, they draw from their expansive interest in the many faces of modern music and re-imagine songs for mass public consumption through thehoodinternet.com.
Nearly 400 mixes and literally millions of free downloads later, The Hood Internet continue to ricochet across North America like an Arkanoid ball, bringing their arsenal of reassembled tracks to crowded dancefloors. And the dance parties have definitely been ignited in every city they roll through, not to mention holding it down at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Monolith Festival, SXSW, CMJ and Canadian Music Week.
Having connected with so many musicians over the past few years, ABX and STV SLV have embarked on recording an album of completely new material–but in the spirit of Hood Internet’s fantasy-sports-league stylistic collabos, the album is bringing together many different musicians from as many different walks of sound, to create a modern collaboration made possible by the speed of the Real Internet.
In the meantime, there are always new mixes and mixtures on the way from The Hood, with original works and remixes filling the spaces in-between. All eyes on the Hood.

Born Daniel Sewell on March 16, 1981, Danny Brown is a hip hop artist from the Dexter-Linwood area of Detroit, Michigan.
Danny is an unconventional hip hop artist employing multiple flows and cadences thus the moniker of “The Hybrid”. His style varies from low pitched gravely tones to a manic, high pitched, squawk.
His lyrics, often dealing with the truth of living in Detroit; poverty, drug abuse, desperate circumstances, etc and his own experiences in the motor city, from selling drugs to underground parties in Detroit’s rave scene juxtaposing those topics with a humorous narrative told ferociously over avant guarde production choices.
Danny has released many free projects over the web with the most popular being 2010’s ”The Hybrid,”Brown has also released an album, “Hawaiian Snow”, with G-Unit’s Tony Yayo, and several mixtapes (Detroit State of Mind 1-4, Browntown, It’s A Art (With producer Mainframe) and Hot Soup). Brown has found much success on the internet through the support of the music blogs and social media and the decision to release “The Hybrid” online for free download.
Danny has worked with many artists in the Detroit hip hop community such as the late J Dilla, Black Milk, Elzhi, Guilty Simpson, Trick Trick, and T3. Also known as a champion of up and coming artists, Danny has worked with lesser known acts such as Oakland, CA’s Main Attraktionz and and UK based experimental producer Paul White and is known for being an ardent supporter of progressive music promoting these types of underground acts via his twitter.
Brown spent most of the summer of 2010 touring with G-Unit, and a few months later released “Hawaiian Snow” with Tony Yayo. Due to lack of promotion the sales were disappointing, however through the G-Unit connection Brown was able to experience firsthand the rigors of touring and the workings of the music industry as a whole. The experience served to jade Danny to the concepts of being on a major label and committing himself to appealing to an urban audience who he felt rejected him because of his look and style of dress which consisted of skinny jeans and vintage tees as 50 Cent refused to sign Danny Brown to G-Unit because he didn’t approve of his distaste for baggy denim. No longer concentrating on appealing to any particular audience, With this new found freedom, Danny delved into making more experimental music based on influences like UK Grime and Progressive Rock.
His experimental sound melded with traditional street narrative has brought about attention from progressive press such as Pitchfork.com, Fader Magazine, Spin Magazine and the like but no press more satisfying than making the cover of the Detroit Metro Times, his hometown’s alternative art’s and culture magazine.
Danny’s music later found a home on Fool’s Gold Records, the independent label helmed by internationally heralded DJ A-Trak and his partner Nick Catchdubs. The label and the artist having the same mindset, the two parties are now focused on releasing his upcoming projects, a free album coming Summer 2011 entitled “XXX” and his untitled Fool’s Gold records debut coming subsequently after.

With one simple, epic neighing of a horse against pounding drum machines, The Brooklyn-based duo captured our attention with 2010′s bittersweet summer jam A Certain Person. It is an honor to properly release their EP In Tension and await with bated breath, a full-length album in 2012.
At once brutal and romantic, Light Asylum exists in that space where industrial gives way to goth, where the city meets the outer regions under the cover of night. Four songs here that showcase Shannon Funchess and Bruno Coviello’s fluid synth pop attack that shifts elegantly from mid-tempo industrial dance to subliminal future ballads that are deceptively uplifting when considering LI’s relentless dark sheen. Calling Funchess a commanding lead singer is an understatement; there is a heaviness and attack in her vocal delivery that is downright sinister. This is contemporary synth pop to a tee that comes to life during their revered live performances.

Enslavement and Freedom. Each measure of the spectrum entangled in the ultimate fight for power. Obtaining justice and equality are no easy tasks, our forefathers and mothers have proven this to be true. May this surge of energy be the catalyst for global understanding. In our struggle let us not forget the trials and tribulations of the great many who have walked along the hazardous path. Recognize history. Prepare yourself for the future. We are in a STATE OF EMERGENCY!?
Toki Wright is a thoughtful and important voice prepared to educate and challenge as well as entertain. As promised, audiences will be afforded access to A Different Mirror.
